From the blogroll: seward street

At our general membership meeting in January 2006, we held a panel on the subject of "artblogging", featuring some of our members who were hosting blogs on various subjects (mostly animation or CG-related). That panel gave me the idea to give this blogging thing a shot -- and the rest is history.

On that panel, DreamWorks animator Jim Hull spoke of wanting to start something to counter the negativity that he saw on other animation blogs. The result, seward street, restarted in October after a six-month hiatus.

seward street is named after the location of the studio where Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Marc Davis and Milt Kahl were sent to work after Snow White when Hyperion was bursting at the seams and the Burbank studio was still under construction. The blog is subtitled "the art of character animation", and its scope ranges from classic Disney models to state-of-the-art 3D designs.

Here, he features a pose test from Jungle Book; here, he reveals the secret of being a great animator.

In March, Jim split his blog in two. He now puts his written postings here, and various links to YouTubes and artwork can be found here.

We're going to do a few posts on various member blogs that were submitted to us for inclusion on our blogroll. If you want your blog listed (your blog doesn't have to be animation or CG-related, but you do have to be a TAG member), just e-mail Jeff Massie at jeffm@animationguild.org.

Thank you for mentioning that it had come off hiatus! I visited regularly a year ago but it had disappeared from my radar since then. Glad to hear it's back.

Two guys' blogs motivated me to start my own: Jim Hull and Ward Jenkins. I still owe Jim a lot for the inspiration of his early Seward Street posts--so eloquent and passionate.

It's not a big deal, but I know from a reliable source that the posted picture did not come from seward street. It was put together by the people at the Character Design Blog.
